Memage
I’ve been looking for a hook to note that ex-comics blogger (now comics journalist) Sean Collins, has returned as a music-and-other-stuff blogger. (Also as a journaler of crypto-fiction.) And dang if he hasn’t memed me, which not only makes me feel all warm and fuzzy but is a perfect excuse. The question at hand:
Behold, the Caesar’s Bath meme! List five things that people in your circle of friends or peer group are wild about, but you can’t really understand the fuss over. To use the words of Caesar (from History of the World Part I), “Nice. Nice. Not thrilling…but nice.”
This is where we establish once and for all that I’m a Bad Geek.
1. Star Wars. Maybe not quite right for this, since I actually despise Star Wars.
2. The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, any medium.
3. The comic book, Street Angel.
4. The White Stripes.
5. Doctor Who.
6. (-alt. for Star Wars) Buffy et al.
Now comes the passing of the meme. And I choose

I’m with you most of the way, except for (1) the first Hitchhiker’s book (it went downhill as quickly as Dune after the first installment.. also, the trailer looks great, and I love the casting of Mos Def as Ford Prefect), and (2) if your Star Wars comment includes The Empire Strikes Back, because his hand gets fucking cut off. Further, the White Stripes get their asses kicked by the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. I almost typed Stewart.
My addition: most lo-fi rock. Don’t tell me Slanted and Enchanted is a seminal moment in rock history, because I ain’t buyin’ that crap.

I’m with you on Street Angel and Doctor Who. More on the latter. I’m the head comics pioneer in my social circle, the one most likely to search out the weird stuff, so I’m probably the only person in my immediate social circle to have even heard of Street Angel. Read it, shrugged, tossed it aside, forgot about it till it started showing up in blogs, though “WTF?” and forgot about it again.
.
Doctor Who, on the other hand. Holy crap. Growing up it was like I was the only person on the planet who didn’t get this show. Now there are two.

David, the only one on my list I hate per se is everything whatsoever to do with Star Wars. The rest are just eh. But it’s always good to form a club, so I’m in.
