Contempt Citation

President Bush is doubly contemptible. Man wouldn’t veto a spending bill if aliens sucked every last dime out of the Treasury with a tractor beam, but he’ll go all out to preserve the executive power of boundless snooping and covert abuse.

If they really do “hate us because we’re free,” the Bush Administration’s approach to civil liberties constitutes “appeasement” of the first water.

Great pithy post! Jack Balkin examines how these issues of executive power relate to the Supreme Court nomination here (unfortunately the thread devolves into a Clinton impeachment rehash, but the first few comments are relevant).
In addition to the McCain/Graham/Warner amendments to the defense spending bill, Carl Levin has one calling for an independent commission to investigate prisoner treatment. Snowballs, hell, etc., but worth supporting by anyone who wants to be able to live with him/herself for the next few decades. The Human Rights First site has an e-letter.

    Appeasement

As Jim Henley points out, it certainly is odd how some war proponents chant “the hate us because we’re free”…

    A Question About Torture

Bush is threatening to veto a bill that would make it illegal for the US to torture prisoners. Jim Henley says it best:
