The Second Casualty of War
Has got to be art. Bright Eyes’ “When the President Talks to God” (see the video of the Leno performance) is awful. Apparently some people like the message, but there’s neither craft nor sullen art to it.

It was also available as a free download from iTunes at one point. I’m so glad I didn’t spend $0.99 for that turkey. As it is, it’s unchecked in my iTunes list because I can’t imagine why I’d listen to it and I’m too cheap to throw it out.

Then again, Bright Eyes always struck me as whiny and pretentious. But that’s just me.

Ain’t that the truth. Seems like the kind of song one would write if one were, as the Bard said, telling “an idiot’s tale/Full of sound and fury/Signifying nothing.”

I actually like the song (though the performance mentioned sucked). In its “real” version (the one you used to be able to get from iTunes) it’s got flaws, but works quite well. And yes, Bright Eyes is whiney and pretentious — don’t bother buying any of his stuff. This one largely dropped the whine in favor of rage, which made it much more listenable than most of Conor’s stuff.
It’s harsh to judge a song based upon one live performance by a very nervous kid.
