Best. Troll. EVAR.
“Jake” in Crooked Timber’s discussion thread on Reason’s quickie war survey is a glorious achievement in warblog fanboy rampage. Like a Saturn V rocket, his launch (in comment 26) is almost agonizingly slow, but he gathers awesome momentum with each succeeding post, achieving escape-velocity ressentiment.

I liked ”college-squid”, which I’m still puzzling over. Also ”Even Ezra Pound would have called you a bitch.”
Mind you, I’m not giving up on the theory that it’s D-Squared in a clever plastic disguise. Devious is D-Squared. So say we all.

Against the d-squared theory, jake’s name links to a blog with three years worth of archives. Halfway down the first page I spotted incoherent ramblings against Hollywood and figured it was legit.

This is my favorite (from #40):
”Yeah that’s right, college boy, I support Hitchens as well as the US Military, and what’s more I am not republican, nor a Xtian: and if it takes war to take the jihadists down, so be it. Multiple meanings, right dewd, and like everything’s relative, as they teach in your Maoism for Lesbians 101 course.”
It’s so perfect – the ”Maoism for Lesbians 101” is particularly great – it makes me glad to be alive.

Bugger all of ya. ”Jake” is merely privy to Bertrand Russell’s long-suppressed sequel to ”Why I Am Not a Christian,” entitled ”Why I Am Also Not an Islamofascist.” As for Lesbian Maoism, I can only say that I’m an alumnus of Oberlin, and dear Lord, if they didn’t teach it there, then they don’t teach it anywhere.

what about nuberlin, maybe they teach it there?

And jake’s not just at CT (more evidence against the dsquared theory), because I haven’t been there for weeks. ”Maoism for Lesbians” was the tipoff that I’d seen him somewhere today… Digby?Firedoglake? (hey, I’m a Democrat; mock away)

Oh, no, no, no. I did read that very thread today. Don’t anybody go searching through Digby or FDL comments unless that’s the kind of place you already go…

Patrick, my theory on ”college-squid” is that in Jake’s circles ’squid’ must be like ’puke’ is in the military (”staff puke”, e.g.).

I thought it might be a typo for *squad*. Granted the ’i’ is pretty far away from the ’a’ on a QWERTY layout.

Not a reference to Suicide Squid, then? Poo.

”Jake” has many points of overlap with the ”Troll of Sorrow” found on Adam Kotsko’s site and at John Holbo;s ”The Valve”. Better than even odds its him. When his meds are working he’s quite bright.

Personally, I don’t know a single lesbian Maoist with the least bit of sympathy to relativism.

yeah, there’s excellent reason to believe that Jake is the Troll of Sorrow in one of his many guises. He first popped up in one of Kieran’s threads on Badiou and Zizek, spouting on Peirce, Ayers etc. And now seems to have become a regular infestation.

Give War A Chance
Got to agree with Jim: Best Troll Evahmore of the typical college-squid guilt by association: one shows some support for the war, thus one supports Limbaugh and is another cad. Bogus. Russell was not a pacifist during WWII, btw. But…

What you label ressentiment is actually a morph: it’s the objectively strong, pretending to be weak, frothing against [what they claim is] the power of those who are objectively weak.
Thus: Faux News and Weakly Standard and all the rest of the organs that have grown up to warn us of the absolute power of the liberal media.
Thus: The superpower that had its foot on Saddam’s neck for a decade, quite efficaciously, combing through the intel to find the Existential Threat he simply must pose somehow.
Thus: the more the post-1970s pendulum swung right, the more we heard about the looming threats of campus PC, deconstruction, and jake’s other bugbears.
Sullivan nailed it in 1998: the American right is a movement that won’t take yes for an answer. No matter how high they’re riding, somewhere in their hearts they’re still challenging the establishment with young Bill Buckley, losing nobly with plain-spoken Barry, and riding the last helicopter out of Saigon.
