By the Way

An awful lot of right-wing, hawkish sites have been excellent in their follow-up to the Taheri story. See Outside the Beltway, Hot Air, Poliblog and the Politburo Diktat for starters. Also, in comments to the last, the latest outbreak in the tradition of “Is Jim Henley a ‘leftie’? ” disputation. I was never more than a lower-medium-time blogger but at least I’ve got my own meme.

Dude, if you’re going to give a fuck about civil liberties and demand an honest case for war, you’re going to be labeled a lefty. Certainly by the Reds.

But you haven’t really made it till they call you dhimmicrat.

    Confusion Cleared

Henley is a leftie….it’s his meme. It is possible to read a single brief post at many sites and determine the author’s point on the political spectrum fairly accurately. But some, like Henley, are just a bit more complex and prove the point that if…

I have a rule. Any blogger who writes a post which includes a specific ’disputation’ about a political label I’ve used deserves to have it changed to whatever he likes. Pls advise.

    Jim,

I believe you are a liberal in the current sense of the word, which is to say ”one who says things which indicate dissent from the position from the ’conservatives’ in power (regardless of how conservative their philosophical underpinnings may or may not be)”.

A new sense has also recently been floated that includes the above but also adds ”or executes conservative principles in such an incompetant way as to bring conservativism into disrepute”. The new sense is the schism between the administration and the idealogues who feel the administration has either moved too far to the left or just been struck by a series of bad leaders appointed by the baddest bad leader. I have popcorn to pass if you wish to can stand my gleefulness at their cannibalism.

In any case, welcome to the new majority, ya ol’ leftie…

Looking back at early entries here, (Oct. of ’01, wow!) there was a time you used the libertarian label. Don’t know if you still are comfortable with it.

Anyway, I think any libertarian worth the label will eventually annoy conservatives enough to earn ostracization from their ranks.

I dunno. Is Batman a ”people person”? But that doesn’t stop him from joining up with other members of the Justice League when there’s a crisis afoot.

Likewise, you can fight from the left for now because that’s where you can do the most good.

I look forward to that glorious day when people like you and people like me will disagree on more than we agree on. When parking meters and restaurant inspections and municipal water systems are seen by some as the gravest threat to liberty, that will mean the most dangerous dragons have been slain.

Marge: Homer, there’s a man here who thinks he can help you.

    Homer: Batman?!

Marge: No, this man is a scientist.

    Homer: Batman’s a scientist.

    Marge: It’s not Batman!
