Brotherhood of Evil Mutants Now Just Brotherhood of Evil – Wait! I Mean, MUTANTS
SCIRI is changing its name! The Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq will henceforth be called SICI – the Syndicate of Iraqi Criminal Imams. A spokesman explained the name change thusly:
Mixon’s request coincided with yet more bad news from Iraq – a draft US government report claiming that between 100,000 and 300,000 barrels a day of Iraq’s declared oil production may have been siphoned off through corruption in the past four years.
Iraqi and American officials have long contended that oil smuggling from fields controlled by Shia militias in the south is costing Iraq billions of dollars – funds that, it is feared, are going to armed groups.
Gah! I’m mixing stories! That was the conclusion of a Guardian story about something else entirely, and has nothing officially to do with what SCIRI – excuse me, SICI – actually spends its day doing. SICI officially stands for the “Supreme Islamic Council of Iraq,” and as a spokesman won’t quite say, “We changed the name because the ‘Revolution’ is over, and we won.”

Regarding your last link, clearly the Iraqis are just standing up for traditional family values!
Some day, Christian fundamentalists are going to realize just how much they have in common with Muslim fundamentalists, and then the rest of us will be really, truly screwed.

Someone on Juan Cole’s site posted some extreme Arabic nitpicking, the gist of which was that in addition to canning the “revolution” part of their name, they’re also identifying as an “iraqi” party instead of just as a party “in iraq”. For whatever that’s worth.
