Debate Blogging

By Thoreau
I was eager to watch a contest between control freaks, assholes, and lunatics. I decided to do something unusual, however:  Instead of watching a bunch of politicians, I would watch “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” on DVD.  I’m pretty sure I got the same effect.  Although as big an asshole as Jack Nicholson [...]

Slow-Twitch Sunday

Dear Diary: This was quite the week! Highlights include:
* A one-hour brick workout on Wednesday – a reasonably spritely 8-mile bike ride followed by a three-mile run. I did the first half of the run at what I expect to pass for my triathlon 5K race pace – about 9:20.
* Probably my last six-mile run [...]

Headline of the Day

Is America ready for a trophy wife as First Lady. My guess is no, actually. America has exacting and bizarre sociosexual requirements in a President’s wife – socio-asexual, I’d be inclined to say. In particular, if it’s Hillary versus Thompson you’ll see the gender gap of all gender gaps in the exit polls, with women [...]

Dispatches from the Million Mom War

Arthur Silber on whiny little coward Andy McCarthy. I should stress that, while McCarthy is a coward, he is also something worse. Ultimately his hysterics are an indulgence. By Thoreau
The talking points are in.  I just turned on CNN to see somebody talking with the New Hampshire state party chairs of the Democratic and Republican parties.  The GOP state chair made a point of reminding the viewers that we still have troops in Korea and Germany.  I assume that state party chairs don’t [...]

Ron Paul is Valuable, but that Value is Limited

By Mona
.
This former Deaniac opines that Ron Paul is the GOP’s Dean, and holds great expectations:

Right wing blogs are taking his name off of polls. This means two things. First, he’s winning these polls. Second, they’re scared of Paul. And that’s exactly where he wants to be….
.
And here’s one last thing that makes [...]

Random musing: Republicans and Hollywood

By Thoreau
1)  Why is the party of Ronald Reagan, Sonny Bono, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Fred Thompson (3 of them divorced) always complaining about Hollywood and allegedly decadent entertainment?
2)  Why does the party that condemns Hollywood use 24 to justify torture?
These musings were prompted by this picture of Fred Thompson with his second wife.

Music Notes

The New Pornographers have put a new song up on their MySpace page, called “My Rights Versus Yours.” I really like it. It sounds different in a good way, almost as much of a departure as “Bones of an Idol” was. It works its way up to mid-tempo Beach Boys, but starts out quieter and [...]
