Hating America

Avedon’s right. The tone that 26%er politicians and their fanboys use when anticipating a possible terror attack is creepy. And it has perverse incentives – why would you let people who seem to crave a massive terror strike anywhere near the levers of power?

I also suspect they’re wrong, actually. I don’t think they’d get nearly the rally-around-us-pretending-to-be-the-flag effect they got in 2001.

Agreed, particularly on the last sentence. A year ago I’d have worried a lot more that a major terror attack would give the Republicans a fresh leash on life, but at this point I feel pretty sure it would be taken as confirmation of their failures.

True. In fact, there is a strong possibility that it could be pinned on the chaos in Iraq – not serve as a rallying cry to get us deeper in the muck.

They may also get a serious investigation into their competence and techniques.

Like the kind of investigation that didn’t happen after Oklahoma City or 9/11 or the anthrax, but probably will happen next time.

People are starting to wise up.

    Flt 93 was shot down.

You guys have more faith in the American people than I do, but I would hope you would be proved right.

And what is with Chertoff just announcing a “gut” feeling that teh Awful is looming? How is that professional and competent way to deal with the American public?

And it does happen, god forbid, let no one blame his DHS. Perish the thought.

Not only is it sick to long for such attacks, these people have taken a position where whatever happens proves them right! If there are no terror attacks, it shows how successful Bush’s strategy has been. But if there are terror attacks, it shows how much we need Bush’s strategy!

Given how successfully this very same team handled Katrina, when a terrorist wind, storm and flood hit an American city, I think we should have full confidence in Mike Chertoff’s gut feelings.

My God: will these guys do ANYTHING to take Scootergate and Miers/Taylor off the front page?

    Don’t answer that…
