Somebody walks in LA

By Thoreau

Well, OK, West Covina, but it’s still LA County.  My wife has found a job, and we have found a nice and reasonably priced apartment (by local standards–$1095 for a large 1 bedroom with lots of closets and shelves) 1.5 miles away, which in good weather is walking distance.  In bad weather (be it heat or rain) there’s the bus.  Which means that we will be able to pull off the 1 car thing, a feat without precedent for a couple with 2 jobs in southern California.

I’ll be back to blogging more next week.  Now I have to go give a guest lecture.  The University is putting me to work early.  (I doubt it would go too well if I sent the Dean a bill.)  Then tomorrow we’ll visit friends, and have dinner with my new colleagues, and we’ll spend the weekend in San Diego with family.

Huzzah! And special congrats on the one-car accomplishment. There’ll be more heat than rain…

    Thoreau,

Congratulations on your new job, your wife’s new job, and finding a nice apartment within potential walking distance! Even though West Covina, being in the greater Los Angeles “inland empire”, tends to get somewhat hot and smoggy during the summer months, hopefully you won’t find it too unpleasant.

My parents lived in West Covina, back in the 60s before I was so much as a zygote. (I was born in New Haven).

Biking to work might be nice also (reduce 30 minute walk to 10 minute ride) – much better air there than 10-20 years ago. Dry heat – could be nice pool weather.

I admire your accomplishment — next time I relocate, I plan to move somewhere where I can live close enough to work to walk/bike, and where this is realistic for more than 1/4 of the year.

My sister and her husband live in Long Beach and have jobs about 10 miles from home, in different directions, yet are able to live with just one car. They coordinate their schedules and use public transportation; they live next to a Blue Line station.

It’s possible, just difficult and uncommon. Good luck. My wife and I (no kids) form a 2-car household.
