Editor & Publisher on L’Affaire Boylan

By Mona
.
If you found my post below and especially attendant links regarding the email exchanges between Col. Steven Boylan and Glenn Greenwald too much to wade through, here is a concise version of the matter by Greg Mitchell of E&P. That publication thinks the story has legs. Excerpt:
For months the popular blogger [Greenwald] has criticized the growing “politicization” of the military attached to Iraq, starting earlier this year and peaking around the appearance of Gen. David Petraeus before Congress (and the media) in September. This was even before William Safire declared, this past weekend, that the general ought to be considered as a running mate for a Republican candidate for president next year.

I had a brief exchange of emails with Boylan last spring, I went back and found them, with the Boylan in them sounding an awful lot like the Boylan in the disputed email to Greenwald.

Running mate? Why not go for President? Or better yet just declare a state of emergency, suspend the constitution and make him President for Life.

I hope the story does grow legs. It was clear by Sunday afternoon a number of bloggers had begun to note Boylan’s unsolicited email to Glenn Greenwald, and Glenn’s efforts to confirm Boylan’s authorship. So I wasn’t surprised to see an added number of bloggers weighing in on the subject today.

It really dead-ends in one of two places. Either, 1. Boylan, apparently, feels the need to step to the mat every time anyone suggests the politicization of the military, and manages to do so in a way to convince the reader of the military’s politicization. Or, 2. Someone, who is not Boylan, is responding and impersonating Boylan to accomplish the same thing.

I tend – for a lot of reasons – to think it was Boylan. He’s developed a behavioral pattern that extends beyond Glenn Greenwald. Boylan’s sneering, contemptuous tone leaves little doubt what he thinks of the people who are ‘gifted’ with his rejoinders and their concerns about the military.
