What political /moral position do you think merits placing scare quotes around the word “Christian” for a member of that faith who holds said position?
.
If your answer doesn’t include opposition to waterboarding, aka torture, why, you just haven’t been reading enough Power Line. For, verily, they know that Jesus said: “Blessed are the advocates of coercive interrogation and torture, for they shall save us from the Caliphate.”

I suspect that your question is rhetorical, but in case you’re interested: a person is usually defined as a Christian if he can honestly recite the Nicene Creed. The use of scare quotes, however, has no biblical support.

if i were a multi-billionaire, i could hire blackwater or some such similar outfit and get them to rendition say two dozen of the most prominent torture supporters to my private island, where they could be waterboarded until they admitted that waterboarding was torture. The process could be filmed for you tube. Would this be morally wrong?

Yes. But if you decide to go the for-profit route, I’d pay $50 to watch it on pay-per-view.

I don’t think they deny waterboarding is torture, they deny that torture, when used on “Hajjis”, is a Bad Thing.

There’s a certain type of self-described Christian who reads the Gospels and comes away thinking “Those Pharisees were right! They sure showed that hippie who’s boss!”

I prefer the neologism “Christianist” to distinguish actual followers of Jesus from folks who use Jesus as cover.

Dude, I suggest you check out the Book of Job sometime. The book is chock-full of God speaking to Job out of the whirlwind, and that’s not only scary, but also qualifies as using “air quotes.”

I should read the right wing blogs more often. It is fascinating to watch them try to figure out who is a good Republican in the post-Bush age.

bobbo, their problem is that the One True Successor hasn’t appeared yet (they will know that he is the One by the fact that the grass dies in his footprints).
Until the day that He arises from the depths of, um, GOPHome, they have to make do with ordinary sociopathic scum.
