Prediction: Smart detectives will do better than indiscriminate thugs
By Thoreau
It’s being reported that the bombing of the military recruiting station in Times Square might be the work of a serial bomber. I don’t know if this person (assuming it is just one person) is motivated by religion, political ideology, mental illness, general douchebaggery, or whatever. However, I predict that the perpetrator(s) will not be found by indiscriminate wiretaps, torture, warrantless “national security letters,” or the use of informants whose tactics verge on entrapment. Rather, I predict that this case will be solved with smart, focused detective work.
I hope I’m right. And I hope that when the perpetrator(s) is/are captured, any smart detectives on the case receive credit, rather than having to share the stage with some attention whore political appointee who explains that this couldn’t have happened without the Patriot Act or whatever.

Whoever or whatever gets credit for catching the guy after the fact, it’s clear that nobody caught him before the pact. See what comes of denying amnesty to the telcos?

As Knapp points out, this event was precisely sized. It’s simultaneously:
(a) big enough to justify shaving a few more (wafer thin) pieces off the BoR, and
(b) small enough to not count as spoiling GWB’s perfect record of protecting us for seven years, achieved by shaving pieces off the BoR.

In light of heroic Colonel Oliver North’s ostensibly sincere comment plagiarizing my satirical one, above, is this country fucked, or what?
