I’m a fierce critic of 24’s pro-torture ethos, but I’ll stand up for Joel Surnow against Sully’s charge that Surnow “has blood on his waterboard.” I don’t think America’s goons in the military and intelligence bureaucracy torture because they esteem 24. I think they esteem 24 because they torture. People put art to congenial uses. [...]

Robert Pinsky’s poetry FAQ in Slate is actually pretty good. Anything that quotes Robert Hayden’s "Those Winter Sundays" has a head start, mind you, but I like it all.
