QOTD
Obviously, in any compromise, there are compromises.
Some would say this counts as a genuine advance in the Bush Administration understanding of human relations. I think, rather, that they’ve always known this truth, which is why they tried to avoid compromise unless desperate.

it’s not so much that they were trying to avoid *compromises*, as that they were trying to avoid the sorts of things that are *involved* in compromises, like, say, compromises.
so you see.

The sick part was that people laughed at this line like she was being witty.

no, wait: i think i have it now.
it’s because, as a member of the bush administration, she has spent her last seven years believing that “compromise” means “i get everything that i want, and you get screwed”, where “you” ranges over e.g. congress, the iraqis, the bill of rights, etc.
cf. ‘bipartisanship’, which grover norquist told us is republican for date rape.
today’s quote is the stunned recognition that sometimes “compromise” involves someone in the bush regime not getting everything they want! shock! horror!
but don’t worry. it’s an international commitment, so they won’t honor it anyway.
