Go ahead, say it. Make my day.
By Thoreau
Between a trillion dollar war, a $700 billion Wall Street bailout, and God only knows how many billions on Rodina Security boondoggles, if any Republican EVER says “Oh, no, we couldn’t possibly afford this social program!” I’m going to do like Hilzoy and punch him.
Mind you, I’m a skeptic on a lot of social spending, and I can think of good arguments to be made on these issues. HOWEVER, there isn’t a single argument that’s worth hearing from the crowd who brought us the past several years. Indeed, after all is said and done it may well be that there is no money for social spending, but whose fault is that, hmm? Sorry, Republicans, but the grown-ups table is out of room. Yes, I’ve observed loudly and frequently that Democrats are part of the problem too, and if I have my way a lot of them will also be kicked out of the grown-ups table, but the first ones to the card table with the sippy cups will all be wearing Red shirts. It’s just like Star Trek!

Oh, but thanks to all those earlier boondoggles, we really CAN’T afford any future social programs! Heads I win, tails you lose. Thanks for playing, though.

Meanwhile we keep on sending billions of $ overseas to pay for oil! As best as I can tell there are no grown-ups. Sell the table, we need the cash.
