News(feeds) You Can Use

I did not know that Cato-at-Liberty has a handy RSS customization tool. You can specify specific subjects for your feed. I love the work of their foreign policy, civil liberties and intellectual property scholars. I find that a little school voucher talk goes a long way. Accordingly I tweak my feed, and am happy.

Where the Money Is, the Continuing Story

Your truer words were never spoken words of the day come from Benjamin H. Friedman of Cato:
What’s important to keep in mind is that cutting defense spending requires cutting defense commitments and force structure. [Barney] Frank is quoted saying: “We don’t need all these fancy new weapons.” That’s true, but you don’t save 25% of [...]

Obama Preemptive Disappointment Watch

Entirely reasonable approach: figure that if Michael O’Hanlon is on the bandwagon, you miscalculated somehow. Counter-argument: You just know O’Hanlon waited som long because he planned to endorse whoever the likely winner turned out to be. In that case, O’Hanlon’s endorsement is just sychophancy, and augurs nothing in particular.

Taxi to the Dark Side

By Thoreau
Against my better judgment, I watched Taxi to the Dark Side.  All it did was make me very, very angry.  I should have listened to my wife.  I did, however, learn two things that I will highlight:

Identifying Demons by Names and Zip Codes

Sara Palin’s association with "spiritual warfare" Pentecostalism might seem to shed a different light on her "pro-America parts of the country" routine.

I Love You More Than Anything in the World / I Don’t Expect That Will Last

Bob Murphy suggests a fun game:
I would like the pro-Obama people to come up with specific things that would make them admit they are mistaken right now, in their advocacy of Obama. For example, if Obama orders the use of nuclear weapons on Iran, surely that would count, right?
To be clear, I’m not talking about [...]

Obvious-UPDATED

By Thoreau
Hey, remember Congress decided to borrow $700 billion (a debt that we will all have to repay) so that a former Wall Street executive could give it all to Wall Street firms and thereby protect the common man from ruin? Well, who could have possibly predicted that he might not let us in [...]

I’m thoreau, and I largely approve this platform

By Thoreau
The ACLU has a platform for the next President.  I approve of all the day 1 items and basically all of the first 100 day suggestions.  A lot of the longer-term stuff is narrower in scope, and sounds good on the surface but I’m uncomfortable endorsing a long list of narrow items because devils [...]
