John Juan Cole explains that the Farsi translation of “Sarah Palin” is “Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.”
No doubt he’s playing up some parallels and downplaying some differences, but it’s nonetheless true that Red Province political factions around the world have a great deal in common. Fortunately, we latte-sippers have a lot in common as well. My former boss is a Shiraz-sipping elitist from Tehran, and I always found him to be a decent guy and good scientist. In my current job, my best friend among my colleagues is a Shiraz-sipping elitist.
At this point I should probably issue a call for understanding across cultures, but I think we latte-sippers, Shiraz-sippers, chai-sippers, etc. would prefer if Sarah Palin and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad not join forces.

Oh, Juan Cole — how naieve. Sarah Palin was not saying the press was making things up about the soldiers. Rather, she was saying that in “making things up” about her, the press was dishonouring the soldiers. There’s a difference. One is Caesar entering Gaul, & the other is Caesar returning to Rome & declaring himself dictator.
