(Update)All Libertarians Only Care About Taxes and White People
By Mona
Everyone “knows” that, right? Well Radley Balko’s Pulitzer-worthy journalism was the sine qua non of this. Or at least, his publicity-generating investigations mean that Cory Maye will now have a superb defense team. (And for those who may not know, Maye is an African-American.)
*****
Update: Balko quoted at Mississippi’s Clarionledger.com (scroll up a bit past comments):
Radley Balko, an investigative reporter and senior editor for Reason magazine, has written extensively about the case, calling it an outrage.
Tuesday’s decision is the best Maye could have hoped for, he said, but the opinion was lacking because the judges “went out of their way to avoid the more controversial parts of the case,” such as whether the search warrant was obtained fraudulently.
His advice to prosecutors would be to offer Maye a plea that would let him go home to his family.
“The guy has been in prison for eight years, more than half that time on death row,” Balko said. “At worst, he’s guilty of poor judgment under some pretty traumatic circumstances. He had no criminal record, wasn’t a drug dealer and has been a model prisoner. Cory Maye isn’t a threat to society. Let him go back to Monticello to be a father.”

Ray is right!
It’s unlikely that I am one in twenty; shit.

Sheesh. I don’t think libertarians care about white people.

Gotta admit, that’s a new one on me. I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone say this, or read where anyone had written it–except for the title of this post.

You forgot guns. Libertarians also care about guns.

That’s too broad. (95% of) Libertarians don’t care about the army having guns, or even the police having guns (and SWAT teams having very big guns) – as long as they aren’t being used to collect taxes or arrest (white) people for having drugs.
I mean really, you could just say
(95% of) Libertarians only care about themselves.

95% of PEOPLE only care about themselves. That there is no reliable method of barring all but the unique other 5% from political power is at root why libertarianism exists at all.

Ray and I almost forgot in our hating of the libertarians to be happy that a likely-innocent man is getting a new trial in a much more favorable jurisdiction. Fuck you again for confusing us, libertarians!

So, amongst their chief cares are weapons, taxes, white people, and drugs?

Don’t forget gold-backed currency. And colloidal silver. And comic books.
See, we care about lots of things!

But aside from caring about taxes, weapons, white people, drugs, gold-backed currency, colloidal silver, comic books and Cory Maye, what have the libertarians ever done for us?

Libertarians are also pretty keen on ending eminent domain abuse. Witness the multiple head explosion over that crappy Kelo decision.

“95% of PEOPLE only care about themselves.”
Yes, but only libertarians have thought up a political philosophy to justify that selfishness.

You’re thinking of Objectivism, Ray. And I agree that way too many who call themselves libertarians subscribe to such contradictory, unworkable, fantasy bullshit.
No, selfishness is not a virtue, helping others isn’t evil, and anyone who thinks the most persecuted people in modern society are businessmen has the IQ of a fish.

Selfishness can be a virtue; it depends on the context. You can do a lot to serve your fellow man by being selfish in fact.
