3) The best thing about reading the Economist is the annual Christmas special, with all sorts of extra articles on whatever odd thing a writer happens to find interesting. This year’s article on the telegraph (subscription only, get thee to a newsstand) is especially fascinating. Short version: 150 years ago, everybody was certain that this newfangled electronic media would undermine the business of reporting news, and the only way to survive would be to offer commentary and analysis and cater to niche markets. Now, that’s not to say that it won’t happen this time just because it didn’t happen then, b ut seeing people worry over the same things again and again is interesting.
