Pretty Maids All In A – Whoah! Ow! Ouch!
Mostly, when I’ve watched Castle, it’s made me think Joss Whedon is underappreciated as a director of actors, since I think he got more out of Nathan Fillion than the current bunch does. But Mo at Sin Aesthetics argues that Castle has figured out how to “create tension and jeopardy in action genre [media] without reducing female characters to hapless, helpless, sardoodledum-y plot devices for the male protagonists.” A nice bit of media criticism. Also, Dana Delaney? Sigh.

She’s not wrong, but I don’t know how unique _Castle_ is in this regard these days. _Fringe_ and _Dollhouse_ managed to do this (whatever their other faults), too; _Medium_ (in its better days) subverted the formula; and the original _CSI_ and _L&O_ were nearly gender indifferent.
